Why it
takes long

Maven is Ines Vandaele and two machinists. Everything below is why the collection is fourteen pieces and not forty.

We buy the cloth first

Every season starts at a mill clearance, not at a sketch. We take what is left over in quantities nobody else wants: eleven metres of alpaca, forty of melton, a roll of linen the colour of wet stone. The collection is then drawn to fit the cloth.

It means the runs are short and they do not come back. Twelve Pell Coats exist. When they are gone the pattern goes into the drawer and something else is drawn against next season's cloth.

Two machinists, one room

Sien and Aurelie have been sewing on the Kloosterstraat since 2019. A cape takes eleven hours. A slip takes four, and three of them are the French seams you cannot see. Nothing is sent out, which is slow and is the entire point.

Repairs are free for as long as the label exists. Send the piece back and it comes home mended, with a note about what gave way.

Materials and care

What it is,
how to keep it

Composition, origin and the shortest honest instruction for each cloth in the collection.

Melton
Undyed wool, 640 gsmWoven at Lanificio Bottoli, Vittorio Veneto. Air it after wear. Sponge and press with a damp cloth. Dry clean once a year, never more.
Alpaca
Deadstock alpaca and woolMill clearance, Verviers, 2019 stock. Brush along the nap with a soft brush. Do not press directly, use a cloth.
Linen
Washed Irish linen, 185 gsmSpun and woven in Banbridge. Machine wash cool on a short cycle, line dry in shade, press damp. It softens for about thirty washes.
Drill
Organic cotton drill, 320 gsmWoven in Porto. Wash cool inside out. Expect a centimetre of shrinkage in the leg on the first wash; the pattern already allows for it.
Lambswool
Donegal lambswoolSpun in Kilcar, knitted in Roeselare. Hand wash in cool water, no wringing. Dry flat on a towel. De-pill with a comb, not a razor.
Silk noil
Silk noil, 140 gsmWoven in Como from short-staple waste fibre. Hand wash cool or dry clean. Press on the reverse while damp. It creases; that is the cloth, not a fault.

Size guide

Four sizes,
one fit

Maven cuts in four sizes and one shape. If you are between two, take the larger; the atelier will take it in for nothing.

How to measure

Measure over a shirt, not skin, with the tape flat. Bust at the fullest point, waist at the narrowest, hip twenty centimetres below that. Then compare the garment measurements, not your own, to something you already like.

Still unsure? Write with the measurements of a piece you own and we will tell you which size matches it.

Flat measurements in centimetres, taken across the garment and doubled.
